The Gem of The Porto di Maratea

In the middle of the Coast of Maratea is the ancient and picture-perfect Porto di Maratea - one of Italy's last unspoiled fishing villages.   The Porto is home for many of the affluent from Milan and Turin (as witnessed by a harbour full of large yachts)  -  they have made sure this treasure of a  fishing village has not been ruined.  While not spoiled, it is now "chic"  with a number of cafes  and high-end restaurants.

The gem of these restaurants is Ristorante 1999 - this sits in the harbour with its elevated terrace and covered patio overlooking the sea, the yachts, the colourful local fishing boats, and surrounded by the soaring Maratea mountains - on top of which is Italy's largest statue of Christ -  Il Cristo di Maratea.

Just above the Porto is the equally picture perfect hill-town of Maratea famous for it views, authenticity, and 44 churches.
